2020-2021: abstract
An important motif in my painting is the use of the grid. Not a perfect grid but rather an underlying structure that brings the elements of the overall image together.
The process that I use to make my art involves applying plaster and acrylic gel to stretched canvas or other supports in order to create a textured surface. Acrylic paint and various materials are then applied.
The work is rudimentary and rough rather than slick and perfect. It is a statement about primitive instincts compared to modern technology.
I developed my creative style when I lived in Detroit. As this once vital city was falling into hard times, homes were abandoned, neglected or in disrepair. The images of those peeling and layered surfaces, fading colors and graffiti continue to inspire my work.
